As previously reported by Financial Express Online, the long awaited S-400 has started arriving in India for the Indian Air Force (IAF). After that, a team of Russian experts will arrive in India next month (January 2022) to transfer the equipment to the site and help the Indian team trained in Moscow to start the operational process. The supply of various components of the system started in November this year.

A top official told Financial Express Online on condition of anonymity: "It is too early to discuss this as the first batch of S-400s is being delivered to India. The delivery will end in 2023. Only then will a decision be made. It will be taken."

This was celebrated in 2018 when Russian President Vladimir attended the annual India-Russia Summit.

The first installment of the S-400 air defense system made by India in 2019 is equal to 800 million dollars. In fact, by 2019, both countries have agreed to use the Indian rupee as the mode of payment. Speaking to the media at the time, an embassy official in New Delhi explained that India's leading bank would transfer payments to Russian state-owned Sberbank in rupees. The Bank of Russia branch will then transfer the money in rubles to the Head Office in Moscow.

Based on publicly available information, India's current air defense system has an operational range of 400 km, and the new version of the S-500 is capable of targeting ballistic missiles at a range of 600 km.

Social media claims that the S-500 has an advantage over the S-400 due to its ability to target hypersonic missiles. The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) is working on developing a hypersonic missile, which will be ready by 2024. The S-500 is capable of targeting American fighters such as the B-2, F-35 and F-22 stealth aircraft.

What India has received is the world's best S-400 air defense system. The system received by India is capable of striking fighter jets, drones, missiles and rockets. India has ordered five regiments – meaning each regiment has four missiles and a combined eight launchers – so the system can fire up to 32 missiles at once if needed.

According to reports, the Russian army is ready to replace the S-400, which has been in service since 2007, with the S-500 in 2024.

As previously reported by Financial Express Online, the system acquired by India will be located in the northern part of the country. Why? Because of this location, it can prevent airstrikes from Pakistan or China.

Russia's Deputy Prime Minister Yuriy Borisov said on Monday that India could be the first to purchase Russia's S-500 air defense system after the Russian Armed Forces receive the required quantity.

It comes as Russia began supplying India with the S400 Triumf air-to-air missile system under a deal signed by the Narendra Modi government as the US continues to threaten sanctions over New Delhi's military action with Moscow.

"If India expresses its desire to buy this modern equipment, it may be the first on the list," Borisov said in an interview with RBC television. Russia's Deputy Prime Minister stated that Moscow will export the S-500 only after supplying the necessary quantities to the Russian forces.

Last month, the United States said it had not decided to waive CAATSA sanctions on India's purchase of the S400 anti-missile defense system, adding that Washington would continue negotiations with New Delhi on the arms deal with Russia.

Regarding the easing of sanctions against India, State Department spokesman Ned Price said, "We urge all our allies and partners to avoid transactions with Russia that could be subject to sanctions under CAATSA (the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act)."

Earlier this month, Russian President Vladimir Putin held the 21st India-Russia Summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The leaders of the two countries expressed satisfaction at the continued progress in their "Special and Special Strategic Partnership" despite the challenges posed by the Covid pandemic.

He also expressed his happiness at the first meeting of the 222nd Foreign and Defense Ministerial Dialogue and the meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission on Armed Forces and Military-Technical Cooperation held in New Delhi on December 6.

In a joint statement, the parties expressed their commitment to advance cooperation in the field of defense, including the development and production of military equipment, components and spare parts, improvement of the after-sales service system, acceptance of quality control, and regular joint training. from the Armed Forces of both countries.

Although Russia and China are not officially allies, the two countries are still partners in terms of military equipment. Although China has built up its domestic arms industry, Beijing still looks to Moscow for aircraft engines and air defense systems.

The partnership is expected to continue. China and several former Soviet states may be among the first buyers of the S-500 anti-aircraft missile system.

The mobile surface-to-air/ballistic missile system was developed by the Almaz-Antey Air Defense Concern to replace the aging A-135 missile system currently in use. The S-500 is considered a step up from the S-400 Triumf, but it will augment rather than replace the platform. It has a range of about six hundred kilometers and is believed to be capable of targeting hypersonic cruise missiles and stealth aircraft. According to experts, the S-500 can also target satellites in low Earth orbit.

China is understandably interested in the platform as it continues to strengthen its position in the South China Sea. Complicating matters a little more is the fact that India may be the first potential buyer of the S-500 Triumph-M. But potential adversaries China and India have expressed interest, which is not a serious reason for Russia's concern at the moment.

"We consider India, as well as China and all the countries and partners with whom we have long-standing relations, predictable buyers of this latest system," said Dmitry Shugaev, head of the Russian Federation for Military-Technical Cooperation. The state-owned TASS news agency reported an interview with RBC media on Friday.
